Buying a Chromebook was easier when there were only 2 options. Fortunately we have come a long way from the early days of Chromebook, and today there are 100s of options available.

Here are the top 3 things I look at when I’m recommending Chromebook to anyone, and they are in the order of priority.
- OS Support duration – Google makes a multi-year commitment to update Chromebooks every time a new Chromebook launches. These updates come directly from Google and the updates are silently installed every 2 to 4 weeks. Once these updates stop, you can still use the device, but it may not get security updates anymore.
Recommendation: Pick a device which was launched in the last 2 to 3 years. - Performance – Chromebook performance depends on multiple factors which include the CPU, amount of memory and other system features. When comparing devices in the same price range, always check for performance differences.
- Price – Most folks looking at Chromebooks do so for price considerations. Pricing should be a critical input to your decision making process, but it not be the #1 priority.
