Chrome for billions

Chrome team made an interesting post yesterday where they highlighted some interesting facts of how they manage to update Chrome for billions of users week after week.

None of this should be a surprise to those who watch my block, but here are the top four take aways

  • They emphasized that there are multiple Chrome Channels and they listen to feedback from users as code changes move from one channel to the next
  • Chrome releases are not rolled out to 100% of the users immediately. Its a slow process.
  • When an issue is found with the release, they halt the rollout and coordinate with Chrome teams around the world to find a quick solution. Once a fix is identified they do a build, test it and start rolling it again.
  • They follow Project Zero disclosure policy due to which they have a goal of releasing fixes for actively exploited security vulnerabilities within 7 days to the stable channel.
